Creative Juices

source unknown
Let’s face it, they don’t always flow.
Sometimes I have to be patient and take my time.
Time to consider, time to reflect, time to clean out the cobwebs.
It’s easy to write about what everyone is talking about.
It takes time to emerge and be authentic.

Writing rituals ease me into the creative flow.
These rituals begin in a quiet comfortable place. I bring along my notebook filled with good humor & grace, meditative thoughts & marvelous ideas ~ My iPad, my favorite writing pen, a pile of dog-eared books & magazines and I’m ready to settle in.
via one deep breath
I should mention that during this time I’m seldom ever alone.
One page leads to another ~ hours pass and I often find myself in the company of saints.
Authors, poets, photographers, gardeners, designers, bloggers, survivors, mothers, daughters, mentors and friends ~ Each of who has their own authentic voice and what seems to be a special message just for me.
I’m incredibly inspired by the work of their hands, their hearts, and their minds.

Before I close, let me ask you ~
How do you get your creative juices flowing?
Do you have rituals?
We’d all love to know.

  1. Oh I love rituals that lead to creativity! After I had surgery in January and had 8 weeks at home to recover, I found myself with a routine and rituals that I had never dreamed of. My kids are now in school full time, so I wasn't home with a baby or a sick child....just me and my urge to create. I wrote a bit, crafted a lot for Etsy, and dreamed of being a stay at home mom with the ability to create daily! I love your routine....it is very similar to mine.

  2. Lately there are two situations in which I find myself flooded with ideas and inspiration -- from without and within. In the first, I sit in a comfortable chair near the window in my bedroom. Since it's on the second floor and we're surrounded by forest, it feels as if I'm in a tree house. Then I open my iPad and start flipping through the Flipboard app. I have subscribed to a crazy number and mix of sites and publications on Flipboard, including my favorite blogs and Twitter feed. Some days it seems like every image I see takes me to a new place. My second technique harkens back to my college days, when I discovered a tiny carrel in the furnace room in the basement of a huge old brick dormitory. It was very warm, very quiet, and the white noise of the furnace shut out sounds of partying upstairs. When we bought our house five years ago, I was thrilled to see a space just large enough for a desk and chair, in the basement furnace room. No window, just a vent for fresh air. I close the door, sit at my computer, and go into a kind of creative trance. I'm a writer, but this doesn't feel like work.
Thanks for sharing your rituals. And now, back to mine...

  3. I think there are certain rituals and routines that I have, one is rising early to find a moment of sacred space.
To give thanks, to feel blessed for fresh water, sun, light, my family, friends and the fact that I get to create every day. There is a flow in finding the gratitude and beauty that each day is a gift waiting to unwrap.

  4. So beautifully written Lisa. I did have my rituals & I lost them. I can't seem to write if my life was threatened. I does take thought, and a tranquil spot and harmony. I adore what Patricia said about giving thanks and feeling blessed. I am in in the company of very wise women.

  5. Getting my creative juices stopped is my challenge, not getting them going.

    Thanks for the interesting blog.
